The first success in the creation of a digital video was reported back in the 70s and 80s when with a special effect unit and some time base connectors, an analog video input was digitized. The outcome of such experiments was the improvement of the video quality for manipulation, effects and signal. Bosch also created digital video equipments in the 70s but they remained lab research only until 1986 when the first digital video was created with Sony D-1.

The first types of digital video formats depended on the use of an analog source that served as the starting point for the digitized encoding in computer-readable patterns. Step by step, television transmissions adopted the digital video standard when passing from the analog to the digital signal. Yet, another element that completed the digital video revolution for good was the appearance of the non-linear video systems. High definition television would not be possible without it.

At present, almost every family has at least one digital video camera, not to mention that the technology is available with all the communications devices we use today. Only the older phone models are camera-less. Moreover, the market has been quickly won by the popular concept of camcorder that combines a camera with a recorder. A digital video can be stored and copied without any degradation of the information; after editing, the clarity of the image is the same as at the moment when it was filmed.

Besides the combined use with mobile phones, digital video has lots of applications with video conferencing systems as well as with communications on the Internet. The editing process has been made really simple and there is an avalanche of programs, softwares and tools that make editing possible. Windows Media and MPEG2 are the most common of Internet applications that perform digital video editing.

It is impossible to exhaust the number of applications and the constant extent of free digital video in day to day life. From corporate business use to home applications, digital technology now defines our society better than ever. And more evolved forms are expected to appear. Digital video technology can still surprise us!
